Description
Scientists believe passionflower works by increasing levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA lowers the activity of some brain cells, making you feel more relaxed.
PASSIONFLOWER DOSAGE
Used as a tea, 0.3-0.5 grams in a day is a standard dosage. For the most hallucinogenic effect, let 3-4 grams of Passionflower steep in hot water for about 30 minutes.
PASSIONFLOWER ACTIVE COMPOUNDS
Researchers have been unable to identify the herb’s active compounds. Attention has focused on flavonoids (medicinal passionflower contains up to 2.5% of these chemicals); maltol; and harmala alkaloids such as Harman, harmine, harmaline, and harmalol. It’s probable that it’s the synergy between several chemicals in passionflower that is responsible for its effects.
